The Myth of Philosopher’s Stone
Philosophy is a kind of hidden thing, that people know about, but don’t often study, much like the myth of a philosopher’s stone that is said to turn common matter into gold.
But what is this myth really asking of us?
What is the idea of being able to transform the ordinary into extraordinary really telling us about the meaning of life and our role in it?
The past 4 months I was teaching a class on literacy, which I took as a course on philosophy because it overarches the idea of understanding, critical thinking, and rational thinking.
While teaching, my student kept asking me what is philosophy and I would often hesitate before answering.
The truth is, philosophy is everything.
Why?
Because philosophy gives us the tools to build into further ideas.
Without philosophy, we wouldn’t have medicine, mathematics, government, education, technology, physics, or media.
All of these are bodies of thought, which build on principles of philosophy.
That isn’t the point of this post, but a foundation for one next week.
We are all Philosophers
I recently found my grade 12 philosophy magazine from my favourite teacher’s class.
On the back cover is a picture of my class and the words where every girl can become a philosopher.
These words stuck out to me, as I’ve learned philosophy from that class and continue to learn, question and ponder ideas everyday.
It came to me recently, the philosopher’s stone, magic, and answers we seek are all within us.
The path to this innate wisdom is alignment.
How do you tell if you’re out of alignment?
Before COVID-19 started, I signed up for a Gaia trial. I didn’t realize that it ran out and I had bought a year membership! I see it as a blessing because I’ve been watching so many fascinating videos.
Gaia is Netflix for metaphysics and spiritualists. The content is mediations, yoga sessions and original series with experts in their fields.
So, back to alignment. I’ve learned that we’re out of alignment when we are in a sympathetic nervous system, and our energy is depleted, our body isn’t digesting foods and each chakra is an energy centre which secretes hormones related to that centre of the body.
In order to realign ourselves, we must release the nervous system and return to a state of homeostasis or balance.
For me, meditating for 22 minutes and focusing on nothing, just the black nothingness in front of my eyes where the TV would be has helped incredibly.
I also love to write and journal about my fears and anxieties. I have taken my journalling from reflections of the day to intentions for the next two weeks and little steps to help me get there at this moment.
Remember…
Everyone has a different path, and not everyone will be able to access their ability to reach the philosopher’s stone within them.
Philosophy is the guide to get us to the place of enlightenment.
The goal is to choose which philosophy resonates with you, and your experiences and then become that philosophy.
The process of embodiment is difficult and will require dedication, transcendence, and ascendence into your truest philosophical self.
