Is it day 4 already?! Get ready for today’s post with 15 journal prompts for self connection. 🌼
If you’re unfamiliar with journalling, these journal prompts are a great place to start! The aim of each is to learn more about yourself and what you consider self-connection.
The Journal Writing Process
As you begin writing with the journal prompt at the top of the page, I encourage you to write from the heart. Put on some music that makes you smile, and be with yourself in a true, authentic way.
Journalling is a tool for understanding ourselves. These prompts will help to dig deeper into your own understanding of who you are, what you’ve experienced (both positive and negative), and allow for greater understanding of your own self-connection process.
Are you ready? Notebook open, pen in hand? Then, let’s begin!
1. What is one area of my life I can become more connected to?
This prompt asks a hard question! But, don’t despair. That is the point of journalling, to think about and write about the tough questions.
I often search journal prompts for self-connection and I read them, get inspired, but then I go to write them down and find myself with this feeling of … not wanting to!
It’s often that I personally avoid using prompts, and will write a letter to myself instead, however, there is a lot of value in writing with prompts for self connection, as it will help to understand where the fear or blockage is coming from.
As a reflection from what I just wrote, I guess my own homework is to begin writing with prompts! Do you think a blog post title is a prompt? haha, jokes, I have to get over the fear of being specific in my own personal life.
2. If money didn’t exist, what would your life look like?
This question goes even deeper! It asks you what you would be doing if money, economic stresses, and other forms of capitalistic structure disappeared. What would you be doing in your daily life?
Another sub-question to consider here, is what am I doing only to earn money, and is that holding me back from what I really want to do?
3. How have my experiences led me to where I am right now?
Asking yourself how your experiences have led you to this moment is leading us into the process of understanding that we are responsible for our choices and everything happens for a reason, just the way it is supposed to!
Okayyyy, I said a lot of things in that lil snippet up there, but I’m really interested in learning how taking responsibility for my choices can change my own perspective on my life. So go with it, and write about how your experiences, both good and not so good, have led you to this exact moment!
4. What is something I do daily just for myself?
I’m loving how these prompts are coming out! If you are new to my blog, my writing style is very impromptu and based on what I’m thinking and feeling in the moment, so sometimes my writing doesn’t quite get my intention across to the reader. That’s why I’m really enjoying vlogging and creating videos as well as written content.
Back to the main topic; what is something you do daily just for yourself?
This question aims to help you identify where you take time for yourself on a daily basis. If you aren’t feeling like you do something daily, write about what you would do if you had time in your schedule for daily self-care practice.
5. If I had one-million dollars to donate, where would I donate it and why?
Writing these prompts for self-connection in the midst of a global health crisis and human rights movement for racial justice, leads to a feeling of wanting to make an impact.
If you had an extra one million dollars, specifically for donation to a cause, to make an impact and leave your mark on the world, where would you donate it, and how would you use this money to ignite social change?
It’d be fun to be specific in writing the answer to this question. How would donating this money for social change make you feel? Would it give you a feeling of being of service to others? Would you feel more connected to the Universe, Source, God, and all the connectedness of universal consciousness?
Consider what your future kids would think about how you made your impact. If you’re young like me, and don’t have a family to think about right now, how would you answer this question differently in the future?
6. What are my good habits, strengths, and skills?
Thank you guides of the highest truth and compassion for writing through me. The message I receive from my guides today about self-connection is that all of the ways we connect with ourselves are also ways we connect with others.
Whenever I don’t know what to write, I take a lesson from Gabby Bernstein and write the phrase above to get my connection to the greater universal consciousness going. Check out her Spirit Guides meditation for the process of centering yourself and connecting before writing.
This prompt for self-connection asks what are your good habits, strengths, and skills, because discovering the positive aspects of yourself allows you to focus more on what you’re good at!
Write out a list of your good habits: exercise, writing, eating. All of these are good habits and writing about our strengths and skills can lead to more positive feelings, peace, joy, and harmony in our daily life!
7. Do I judge others? Where/why do I usually judge others?
Asking yourself the harder question is VITAL to self-connection! This prompt is asking about how we judge others because we are usually more aware of it.
However, I believe that when we judge others, we are projecting our own judgements of ourselves onto others, and thus, there is healing to be done in whatever area we judge others mostly for.
Consider this when writing out how you’re judging others! Ask yourself if you are feeling jealous, envious, or insecure about something, and then write about how to overcome that thing.
8. What is my GREATEST fear?
Oooh, talking about our fears is not an easy thing! However, this is the perfect space, time, and place (notebook) to discuss your fears with yourself.
No one else has to read what you’ve written, and no one else ever has to know what you are truly scared of, but writing it out to yourself, and for yourself is powerful because you, as the free writer, can write the opposite of that fear below it!
My greatest fear is being judged for being my authentic self.
I can overcome this fear by being my authentic self. Why? Because the fear of judgement holds back authenticity, and then I’m not actually being my true self. So the power over the fear is in the action of doing the thing that scares you the most!
I love how this example turned out, and the wisdom that lies within it.
9. It’s time for a perspective shift! What is one thing I always assume negatively about?
It could be weed, people who use weed, or weed culture. It could be the way men cat call women sometimes, or it could be the way your brother gets special treatment for being the only boy in your family.
This prompt is calling out your biggest judgements, assumptions, and stereotypical beliefs in order to shift them into something more accepting.
If you’ve found the thing you always assume negatively about, continue writing and ask yourself some more guiding questions as you write.
Why do I think that weed is bad when many people use it to help with health benefits? Is it something I judge because of the way society taught me to believe in the war on drugs, or is there something I am holding onto about this topic from my parents?
It could be weed, it could be the way men are treated with more social privileges, it could be whatever is on your heart! The point is to offer the counter argument to whatever you’re reacting negatively to.
10. List your favorite things! Ready, set, go!
Continuing with the idea of getting to know yourself, this prompt for self-connection is asking you to write a list of your favourite things.
In November, when I was thinking about what I want my blog to be, and how to design my blog page, I wrote out a list of all of my favourite things!
At the top is floral print, and surprisingly, the ninth item is philosophy. I’ve written about how philosophy changed my life by opening my mind to the unique way of thinking. I’ve also found a way to use flowers and floral images on my blog.
Writing about our favourite things allows us to understand more deeply where our likes are and if they are present in our reality everyday.
11. What does your life look like in 6 months? 1 year? 2 years?
It is common for visionaries to ask others where they aim to be in 5 years. I prefer to look a little in the future and tell myself what life will be like in order to continue focusing on what I’m doing to get myself there.
I often use this as a prompt for self-connection when I feel overwhelmed by romantic relationships that just aren’t going my way, and connect with my future self by writing about how loved and appreciated I am feeling in 6 months.
12. If I were an animal I would be…
This prompt is always a fun one! I love connecting my personality to animals in order to understand myself better!
Someone asked me this, and I said I’d be a panda, because I love sitting around and enjoying life. I’d also be an elephant because I have been through a lot in my life, but carry onward for the good of myself and my tribe (family & friends).
Remember that you’re not applying physical characteristics from the animal you choose; you can if you’d like but that’s not the point of this prompt.
13. What activity brings me the most satisfaction?
We are in the midst of a global health crisis, and many of us are at home, with a schedule that looks very different than usual. Maybe you’ve taken up a new hobby, or found yourself enjoying a glass of wine and some Netflix instead of going out with friends.
Whatever the activity is, ask yourself which activity is bringing you the most satisfaction. What are you doing in your life to allow this feeling to be consistent?
How can you create the same feeling of satisfaction in other areas of your life? For example, playing music while working from home, or doing yoga before the zoom meeting to centre and ground your mind.
14. If your best friend came to you and said they’re feeling lost and confused, what advice would you give them?
This prompt is playing with the act of giving advice, because advice usually comes from the wisdom of experiences, which means you are using your inner philosopher’s knowledge and wisdom to guide your best friend.
Writing about what you would say to your best friend, allows you to consider what you would say to yourself if you ever had these same feeling of confusion.
It also allows you to see where your wisdom lies in experiences that have made you more wise, and what actions you would advise your friend to take, which you yourself have practiced in your own life.
15. What words do you live by? What is your life quote/philosophy?
I did an interview with someone writing a book on sports in Toronto yesterday, and he asked me about my personal philosophy, as I call myself a philosopher.
I hadn’t prepared anything to say, I prefer to speak from the heart, especially when it comes to philosophy and what I’m writing about. However, my answer was concise and summed up pretty well what my philosophy is.
This prompt starts by asking what words you live by because defining the key words that outline how you want to live your life, is an excellent way to start figuring out your personal life philosophy.
In fact, my VERY FIRST POST, was called 13 Words to Live By and outlined my personal beliefs about how we should be acting in this life.
Remember…
These are only 15 of the possibilities for journal prompts for self-connection. At the end of the day, most journal prompts are helping you to connect with your inner self, your inner philosopher, wisdom holder, and guide of all things possible.
My intention in writing this post is to help you connect with yourself in a more philosophical way, and allow you to ask questions you may never have thought about asking yourself before.
The philosophical way of writing is to ask the big questions, the hard questions, and attempt to answer them through experience, connection, and analysis.
